Specialty
Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid margin, usually the lower one, turns inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the surface of the eye. This friction can lead to irritation, redness, discharge, and persistent discomfort.
Entropion most commonly occurs due to aging and loss of elasticity in the eyelid tissues, causing the eyelid margin to fold inward. It may also be associated with muscle abnormalities or scarring of the conjunctiva.
Ectropion, on the other hand, occurs when the eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner surface of the eyelid. This leads to excessive tearing because the tear duct is displaced and tears cannot drain properly.
In more advanced cases, eye exposure can lead to dryness, redness, and significant discomfort.
Eye irritation and foreign body sensation
Red eye and persistent discharge
Constant tearing
Larmoiement constant
Visible eyelid deformity

Eyelid position abnormality
Both conditions occur when the eyelid margin is positioned abnormally—turning inward in entropion or outward in ectropion.

Diagnosis
The eyelid position, muscle function, and tissue condition are evaluated to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

Treatment
Correction is usually performed through outpatient surgery to reposition the eyelid and improve both eye function and patient comfort.
