Specialty
It is an inflammatory condition associated with thyroid disorders that affects the tissues surrounding the eyes, including the eyelids, eye muscles, and orbital fat.
This condition occurs when the immune system reacts against the thyroid gland and, at the same time, the tissues of the eye orbit, causing inflammation and changes in eye position and function.
Patients may gradually experience dry eyes, redness, more prominent eyes (proptosis), double vision, or changes in eyelid position such as increased eye opening or eyelid swelling.
In most cases, the condition affects both eyes, although it may present asymmetrically or initially involve only one eye.
Treatment depends on the stage of the disease and the severity of symptoms. In early inflammatory phases, conservative treatments are typically recommended to protect the eye surface and control inflammation. In more advanced cases, specific medical treatments or eye surgeries may be required to improve eye function and positioning.
